Osmanabad district is one of the economically underdeveloped districts of Maharashtra state. The population of the district mostly depends on agriculture. However, the district comes under a drought-prone area, frequently facing the scarcity of water. Due to severe fluctuations in the rainfall over the last two decades, agriculture as a source of livelihood has got adversely affected. Only about 14% of the total farmers in the district have irrigated land. The irrigation is underdeveloped and the groundwater is a very unreliable source due to unregulated bore wells. The drought, deficit in rainfall and untimely hailstorms have often led to enormous damage to crops. On top of it, the vagaries of the market and lack of remunerative prices have created accumulated distress on the farmers in the district. The amount of distress on the farmers can be gauged from the fact that around 597 farmer’s suicides have taken place in the district from January 2011 to 2017. So with the aim of reducing the number of farmer suicides, & providing a sustainable source of income to the affected families, the project has been started by Shivar Sansad.
